What Kind of Soil Can I Use?

A quality packaged potting soil mixed with a top soil works best. Soils dug from the landscape may contain insects, weed seeds, or disease organisms. Compost, too, is a very effective growing medium and works quite well in this system. You can choose cells to hold different types of soil as needed for a variety of plants. Make sure the cells are completely filled and level. Soils will not mix and fertilizer can be added to individual cells without worry of runoff or spoilage to other cells and soil.

A light spray hose or watering pitcher is generally used. Excess water isn’t retained in the soil or the cell but, instead, drains slowly keeping the plants properly aerated and moist. Even with additional rain the garden will drain off what is not needed—and you can capture the runoff for recycling.
