Container Application: Use of containers is a great way to garden. If space is limited or small amounts of produce is desired the use of a container is a good choice.

1. Set in center of pot with base of neck at soil level.

2. Follow instructions included with plants, place plants requiring the most water closest to the Olla, and other low water plants towards the perimeter of the container. Fill the Olla with clean water and water the surface soil just to get the plants established.

3. Once plants are established, the Olla should be refilled regularly based on the moisture content of the soil, NOT on the amount of water in the olla.

4. To minimize evaporation, cap the olla with a stopper (stone, plastic lid). Watering times will vary based on olla size, soil type and application.

Mound Application: Use of mounds for planting increases the planting area and assures that the maximum amount of applied water goes directly to the plant roots. Mounds can be shaped to accommodate multiple ollas or can be built around a single olla.

1. Select the area in which you wish to place the mound and tamp the base soil to create a moisture barrier under the mound.

2. Amend soil with which the mound is to be built, and spread a base layer several inches thick over the tamped area.

3. Set Olla in center of base layer and build mound around olla. Placing the olla high in the mound will maximize water efficiency.

4. After mound has been constructed, place plants in the mound, taking proper spacing into consideration. Water mound and fill olla. Recharge olla based on moisture content of the mound (generally top off once per day)

5. Planting with mounds offers the gardener more options to include single plants between ollas, or planting on the sides of mounds in a tiered structure thereby increasing the yield greatly.
